Serjeant William Baldwin (4446)

William Baldwin was born in 1880, the son of James and Elizabeth Baldwin of Begonia Villa, Flaxley Street, Cinderford. After leaving school he worked in the grocery trade before enlisting.

Prior to the Great War he had served nine months in the Boer War, seven years in India, and a further six years in South Africa.

The 6th Dragoon Guards landed in France on 16 August 1914 and during the retreat from Mons were present at, though not engaged, in the Affair at NĂ©ry on 1 September.

Serjeant William Baldwin was killed in action on 20 February 1915, aged 35. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. He is also remembered on the Cinderford Town War Memorial.
