Private Henry Thomas Barnes (266870)

Henry Thomas Barnes was born in 1884 to William and Mary Ann Barnes in Upton St Leonards. By 1901 he was living at 6 Wilford Terrace, Whaddon Lane, Cheltenham and working as an errand boy in a cyclist’s shop.

At the time he enlisted, in the 6th (Territorial) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, he was an employee of the Great Western Railway Company and was living at Longfurlong, Gotherington, the home of his parents.

Private Henry Thomas Barnes was wounded by gunfire during the last few days of the war when on 23 October he was involved in the crossing of the Ecaillon River and the taking of Bermerain. Evacuated to Boulogne he died there, at the General Hospital on 2 November, aged 34. He is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery.

Henry’s younger brother Raymond had also been a victim of the war two years previously being killed in France on 21 March 1916, aged 19.
