Private Sydney Meek (22767)

Sidney Meek was born in 1889. He was one of fifteen children of John and Annie Meek of Harry Hill, Drybrook in the Forest of Dean. He was a coal miner.

Sidney enlisted at Cinderford, his name appearing in a list of recruits published in the Dean Forest Mercury on Friday, 12 November 1915 to promote the recruitment drive of its proprietor, Sir Henry Webb MP, “Pour encourager les autres

He was first posted to the 15th (Reserve) Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment for training before transferring to 7th (Service) Battalion and posting to Mesopotamia.

He was listed as killed in action on 10 February 1917, aged 28 years, and was buried in Amara War Cemetery. He is also remembered on the memorials at Holy Trinity Church and the Memorial Hall at Drybrook.
