Second Lieutenant Arthur Norris Marshall

Arthur Norris Marshall was born in 1896, at Newent, Gloucestershire, to William and Adela.

He started education at Dean Close School after his parents moved from Newent to Camden Lawn, Portland Street, Cheltenham.

As was the custom for boys at the school he was an active member of the Officer Training Corps,
but upon leaving he refrained from going into the services like so many of his peers, instead he
moved to Farringdon where he worked as a clerk at Lloyds Bank.

When war broke ou t Arthur Marshall volunteered and on 16 June 1915 was gazetted Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He was transferred to the 1st Battalion from November 1915, arriving with them at Fricourt on 4 December.

Second Lieutenant Arthur Norris Marshall was killed by a shell at Longueval on 31 July 1916; he was 20 years of age. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
(Pier and Face 2 C).
