Jones: Sapper Charles Spencer (7379)

4th Siege Company Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers

Charles Spencer Jones was born in 1888 in Cardiff but came to live at Steam Mills near Cinderford in about 1894. He worked with his father Thomas as iron founders at Teague & Chew, Heywood Engine Works, Steam Mills, an engineering company that specialised in the manufacture of water pumps and steam equipment.

He attested to the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers on 14 December 1914 and was posted to the 4th Siege Company. He declared that he had previous militia service having served five years with the 1st Monmouthshire Rifle Volunteer Company.

Sapper Jones landed in France on 19 May 1915 and was killed in action in Flanders on 31 March 1916, aged 28 years.

He was buried at Voormezele Enclosures No 1 and 2, near Ypres and is remembered locally on the War Memorial in Holy Trinity Church, Drybrook.
