Hewlett: Lance Corporal George (18366)

George Hewlett was born in 1889, the son of Samuel and Matilda Hewlett of Ruspidge, Cinderford. After leaving Double View Secondary School he joined his father and brothers working underground at the Eastern United Colliery in Ruspidge.

He married Florence Simmonds in 1910 and they eventually moved to Silver Street, Littledean where they lived with their two children Kathleen and George. He was a keen rugby player and was vice-captain of Littledean Rugby Football Club, and played occasionally for Cinderford.

He enlisted at Cinderford in February 1915 and died of wounds on 10 May 1916, aged 27. He was buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.

Lance Corporal George Hewlett is also remembered on the Cinderford town, Littledean village and Double View School Memorials.
