Hack: Private John Walters (266952)

2nd/ 5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment

Private John Walters Hack

John Walters Hack was born in 1881 in Charlton Kings and later worked as a professional photographer in Cheltenham, living in Upper Norwood Street.

When war broke out many of the town’s men rushed to join the ranks and it was to John Hack’s studio that many of them went to have themselves immortalised in uniform before leaving for France. Having seen so many young men come through his studios, John Hack eventually enlisted in the 2nd/5th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1916.

Private John Walters Hack died, aged 37, on 29 April 1918 and is buried in the Pas de Calais in a small churchyard at Berguette along with just 26 other men.

The gravestones are unusual in that rather than being the familiar white Portland stone markers they are of red granite.
