2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment

George Norton Gastrell was the son of Edward and Susanna who lived at Dingle Holme, Hucclecote. Before the war he was an active member of the community having been a member of the Church Lads’ Brigade and playing football for St Philip’s AFC. He was an employee of the ironmongers John Fisher & Co Ltd in Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham before enlisting in the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment in Woolwich.
Serving as one of ‘Kitchener’s Men’ he was wounded on the Somme on 9 September 1916 and was sent home to Monsall Hospital, Manchester. He never recovered from his wounds and died in hospital on 8 October 1916.
Lance Corporal George Norton Gastrell is buried in St Philip and St James Churchyard, Hucclecote and is commemorated on the War Memorials in Hucclecote and Cheltenham.
