Armitage: Flight Sub-Lieutenant George Geoffrey Allen

Royal Naval Air Service

Flight Lieutenant George Geoffrey Allen Armitage

George Geoffrey Allen Armitage was born in Gloucester in 1893, the son of Henry and Katherine Armitage. After leaving school he joined the Royal Navy and served seven years at sea in the training ship HMS Worcester before transferring to the Royal Naval Air Service as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant.

In the last week of his training at Hendon Aerodrome, whilst acting as an Observer, he received fatal injuries when the biplane in which he was 4lying crashed. He died later the same day, Saturday, 11 December 1915.

Flight Sub-Lieutenant George Geoffrey Allen Armitage’s remains were returned to his home town of Newnham-on-Severn and, following a funeral service in St Peter’s Church, buried in the churchyard there. He is commemorated on the War Memorial in the High Street, Newnham-on-Severn.

His epitaph on the family grave memorial had become illegible over the years and in 2008 a CWGC headstone was placed on the grave.
