Delmar-Williamson: Lieutenant George Frederick

Royal Air Force & Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)

George William Delmar-Williamson was born on 10 January 1899 in London, the only son of Frederick and Emily Delmar-Williamson. He was educated at Cheltenham College between 1913 and 1915 and then went on to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.

      He was commissioned as Lieutenant for the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) before being attached to the Royal Flying Corps in October 1916. He served with distinction on the Western Front between March and August 1917 on reconnaissance and photographic duties before being invalided home with concussion. He then served with the Home Squadron on air-raid and anti-Zeppelin duty as an officer of the Royal Air Force.

      Lieutenant George Frederick Delmar – Williamson was killed tragically on 12 July 1918 when test flying an aircraft over Chippenham.

      He was buried with full military honours in Leckhampton churchyard in a family grave.
