Cox C: Private Charles (43340)

1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

Charles Cox was born just outside Gotherington near Bishop’s Cleeve in 1899 and subsequently was brought up in Cheltenham, living at 9 Grosvenor Place.

He enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment in Cheltenham as No 51712 but was then transferred to the Worcestershire Regiment. He was sent overseas to France in September 1918 and on 14 October his battalion was involved in an assault on the village of Auby, a little north-east of Arras. The attack took the lives of 11 men from the battalion, one of which was 19 year old Charles Cox.

Private Charles Cox is buried in Douai British Cemetery in the village of Cuincy and is remembered on the Cheltenham Memorial, St Peter’s Church Memorial and the Gotherington Village Memorial.
