Collins M: Private Morgan John Burchett (10253)

7th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment

Morgan John Burchett Collins was born and raised in Cheltenham. He was a carpenter and joiner by trade, living at 3 Gothic Cottages, Norwood Road. When war broke out, he was amongst the first in the town to volunteer his services and enlisted in the 7th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. Less than a year later, on 19 June 1915, he arrived at Gallipoli.

Private Collins lost his life on a day of fierce fighting as the Turks fought to regain Chunuk Bair, the secondary peak of the Sari Bair range.

He was one of 350 casualties from the Gloucesters that day and his body was never recovered. He is commemorated amongst the 20,771 Commonwealth dead on the Helles Memorial.

Private Morgan John Burchett Collins was 32 when he was killed in action in Gallipoli on 8 August 1915. He left behind him not just a widow, Ada Amelia, but four children.
