Captain Alfred Llewellyn Hale

Alfred Llewellyn Hale was the only son of Charles Alfred and Edith Sarah Hale of Lynwood, Belle Vue Road, Cinderford. He had a sister, Fanny Eileen. His family were prominent in the Cinderford business community, his father and grandfather being directors of local collieries. He was educated at Queen’s College, Taunton where he was Head Boy. He was originally commissioned in the Gloucestershire Regiment.

Captain Alfred Llewellyn Hale was killed in action on 8 July 1918 ‘before Kemmel Hill’, age 21.

He was hit by two bullets whilst in No Man’s Land near his trench at midnight on 6 July, just months before the conflict ended.

He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, near Poperinge. He is commemorated on Cinderford town war memorial and by a stained glass window given by his parents and sister in the Cinderford Wesleyan Church.
