Bubb: Stoker Second Class Robert Edward (K/49438)

Royal Navy – HMS Senator

Robert Edward Bubb was the youngest of 10 children born to William and Gertrude Bubb, at that time living at 65 Alfred Street, Gloucester, according to the 1901 Census. Edward was born on 6 February 1900 at Gloucester. His father was an engine driver.

He joined the Royal Navy (conscripted?) on 19 February 1918, for the period of hostilities, to serve as a Stoker Second Class. His previous occupation was a plumber’s mate.

His principal service was aboard HMS Senator, a destroyer built in 1918, serving from 6 June to 17 October 1918. Thereafter he was on the strength of HMS Blenheim, a former cruiser converted into a destroyer depot ship. This may relate to his period of sick leave, as he died of influenza at East Stonehouse, Devon on 3 November 1918, aged 18.

He was buried in Gloucester Old Cemetery, in a stone kerbed family grave, along with his sister, Marion Alice, wife of Thomas Evans, who died in 1915, aged 30.

The CWGC record shows his mother living at 33 Bishopstown Road, Gloucester.

His Service Record at the National Archives is ADM188/965.
