Driver Sidney Bishop (19844)

Sidney Bishop was born in Cheltenham in second quarter of 1885, one of the twin sons of William and Emily Bishop of 14 Victoria Street, St Paul’s, Cheltenham. His father was a bricklayer and (at the time of 1901 Census) was one of six children.

He enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery at Newport, Monmouthshire and according to his Medal Index Card, went to France on 2 September 1915. He was gassed in action during his service. Whilst on the strength of the 6th Reserve Brigade he fell ill and underwent an operation for appendicitis, dying from the effects on 10 November 1917 in Bute Hospital, Luton, aged 33.

Sidney is buried in Cheltenham Borough Cemetery, his grave marked with a CWGC headstone.
