Corporal Sidney Pitman (92142)

Sidney Pitman was born in the small village of Gotherington, just outside Bishop’s Cleeve. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 9 September 1915 and for a period he served with D Company,
Training Depot, Royal Engineers before being sent overseas.

After 12 months’ service, Sidney was invalided back to ‘Blighty’ where he was treated in a Manchester hospital. He was discharged from the Army on 14 May 1918 due to illness and died from tuberculosis, contracted whilst on active service, at Connaught Hospital, Aldershot on 27 January 1919 aged 22.

Corporal Sidney Pitman is buried in the south-west corner of St Michael’s Churchyard, Bishop’s Cleeve in a family grave, the only Great War military grave in the cemetery.
