Trinder: Lance Corporal Alan John MM (2425)

1/5 Gloucestershire Regiment

Alan John Trinder was born in Cirencester and lived at Querns Hill. He enlisted at Swindon in August 1914 and went to France with the 1/5 Glosters on 29 March 1915.

In July and August 1916, the Battalion was involved in heavy fighting around the Somme villages of Ovillers and Pozieres. On 24 August Lance Corporal Trinder was awarded the Military Medal for meritorious conduct.

Three days later he was wounded in action. Letters from the Battalion padre and another comrade to his parents, William and Leticia, indicated that, following his wound, he had died on a stretcher whilst being conveyed to medical facilities.

Perhaps surprisingly, Lance Corporal Trinder has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, together with the War Memorial in Cirencester Parish Church.
